Four South Carolina juniors have been chosen as winners of the junior ticket design contest for the 74th U.S. Women’s Open Championship at the Country Club of Charleston. The championship, whose junior programming is supported by MUSC Children’s Health, will be contested May 30-June 2.

“The communities that host our Championships are essential to their success,” said Matt Sawicki, championship director. “The junior ticket design contest was the perfect way to engage the Charleston community and further the excitement surrounding the U.S. Women’s Open. Congratulations to our winners – we can’t wait to share their designs from now through Championship week!”

The winners’ designs will be printed and distributed to all juniors who attend the U.S. Women’s Open, as well as at a variety of special events leading up to championship week. In addition, winning designs will be uniquely featured onsite at the Country Club of Charleston. The winners are as follows:

  • Ella Drew, 15, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
  • Ana, 16, Lake City, S.C.
  • Tyler, 12, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
  • Elodie, 11, Charleston, S.C.

“With the U.S. Women’s Open being held in my hometown, I created a design that reflects my own personal experience with the course it’s being played on,” said Ella Drew, who attends Wando High School. “In a low-country silhouette style, I drew a golfer hitting her ball out from under a moss-draped live oak and water colored a typical ‘cotton candy’ Charleston sunset as the back drop.”

Through its support of junior programming, MUSC Children’s Health is playing an integral role in  activities for juniors and their families leading up to and during the U.S. Women’s Open. All youths age 18 and under will receive complimentary admission to the Championship with a ticket-holding adult. Specific on-site activities for juniors will be announced closer to the Championship.

“At MUSC Children’s Heath we strive to provide local kids with fun and healthy opportunities throughout the year,” said MUSC’s Children’s & Women’s ICCE Chief Mark Scheurer, M.D. “Through the junior ticket design contest, we were able to involve local youth in the biggest championship in women’s golf and help get them excited about what’s to come. We are proud to support the USGA as they celebrate women’s golf and the City of Charleston.”

Considered the world’s premier women’s golf championship, the U.S. Women’s Open is one of 14 national championships conducted annually by the USGA. The Championship was first conducted in 1946 and past winners include Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Betsy Rawls, Mickey Wright, Hollis Stacy, Amy Alcott, Meg Mallon, Annika Sorenstam, Se Ri Pak, Juli Inkster, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer, Inbee Park and Michelle Wie.
